Jamel Herring hopes to return from testing positive for COVID-19 on July 14
After announcing the postponement of his second title defense due to testing positive for COVID-19, WBO junior lightweight champion Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring (21-2, 10KOs) and Jonathan Oquendo (31-6, 19KOs) could possibly be rescheduled for July 14.
This will be the same card where another junior lightweight who previously tested positive for the virus in Mikaela Mayer (12-0, 5KO) will have her fight with veteran Helen Joseph (17-4-2, 10KO). The two were scheduled to face off on June 8 which marked the first Top Rank card since boxing’s return from the pandemic. Upon Mayer’s positive test, the fight was immediately postponed.
Mayer would become the first Top Rank fighter to have to pull out of a fight due to having the virus.
It is public knowledge that Herring was in a massive camp in Omaha, Nebraska that involved WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford and former champion Maurice Hooker in preparation for his second title defense.
As of now, he reports that all other members of the camp have been testing negative.
The WBO champ says he feels fine and stated he tested positive on the “tail-end” of having the virus. Although, the July 14 date hinges on him being cleared one hundred percent healthy to fight. More information will be known by Thursday, June 25.
