The Big Ambitions of Naoya Inoue
Hardcore boxing fans are still buzzing in the aftermath of Naoya “Monster” Inoue’s two-round destruction of Emmanuel Rodriguez in the semi-finals of the WBSS Bantamweight tournament in Glasgow, Scotland. With the win, Inoue not only unified the WBA/IBF world Bantamweight titles, but also captured the Ring Magazine Bantamweight championship.
Inoue advances to the WBSS finals, where he will face WBA Super World Bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire. The question is with his profile clearly on the rise, where does he go once the WBSS is done?
Future Ambitions
Well as 3KingsBoxing recently reported, Inoue is set to sign a co-promotional deal with Bob Arum and Top Rank. His first bout following the WBSS tournament is set to be against former Bantamweight titleholder Ryan Burnett. However, Inoue has much more in store.
According the fighter himself, he plans on moving up to Super-Bantamweight and Featherweight. His ultimate goal is becoming a five-division world champion! Furthermore, “Monster” answered a question about possibly facing Luis Nery. He expressed interest in a match-up against Nery, who many regard as the most dangerous fighter in the Bantamweight division.
While there may be current issues preventing a Inoue – Nery bout (Nery is currently suspended from fighting in Japan), the fact that Naoya Inoue is expressing interest in fighting Luis Nery is tantalizing enough for boxing heads. Becoming a five-division world champion is certainly an ambitious goal. In short, he’s on a quest for greatness and reaching the ultimate heights in this sport.
Given what we’ve seen from Inoue so far in his career, and especially last week, he is well on his way to greatness. The little Dynamo from Japan is one special fighter. It’s going to be a treat watching him attempt to reach such a high standard.
