Team Munguia Is Pushing For A Showdown With Canelo Alvarez
Now competing at super middleweight, Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34KO) is on the hunt for a showdown with the division’s undisputed kingpin, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO). The undefeated Mexican was very candid about being able to stand across the ring against the undisputed champion.
Going into the fight against John Ryder, boxing enthusiasts felt Munguia needed to stop the Brit to make a case for a Canelo fight. After scoring four knockdowns throughout the contest, he brought the crowd to their feet when Ryder’s stopped the fight in the ninth round. This victory marked his first win under Hall of Fame trainer Freddy Roach.
During the post-fight interview, Munguia told the roaring fans they should expect him to become a champion. Moreover, he touched upon a possible Canelo fight.
“We don’t know yet. There is nothing on the table yet. But, we want the best of the best at 168, and we are going to be world champion.”
“It would be great among Mexicans, and if Canelo gives us a chance, it would be an honor to be in the same ring as him.”

HE DOES NOT DESERVE THE FIGHT?
To be fair, from a financial point of view, Canelo versus Munguia would be huge in Mexico. However, Munguia should not get to fight for the undisputed crown before two-time champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez.
It is worth mentioning that the undefeated fighter expressed having no issues with fighting Benavidez in the past. Defeating Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Ryder by knockout is commendable, but it shouldn’t catapult him to the front of the line over Benavidez.
In addition, Canelo’s current arrangement with the Premier Boxing Champions makes all this talk of the fight seem like a pipedream. Boxing fans should have the same energy they’ve had for other guys who wanted to fight Alvarez and demand that they do more.
