Jaime Munguia Has Freddie Roach Replace Erik Morales as Coach

When super middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (42-0, 33 KO’s) next slides into the ring, he will do so with a new trainer. Instead of boxing icon Erik Morales in his corner, Munguia will be coached by Freddie Roach. Despite the split, there is no bad blood between Munguia and Morales. Rather than a rift, Morales has accepted the director position at the Baja California Sports Institute. By taking this role, Morales simply will not have the time to properly train Munguia.

BEHIND DOOR NUMBER 1!

For a brief period, talks were hot about signing a duel between Munguia and Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (21-0, 16 KO’s). Yet, in more recent days those negotiations appear to have lost a great deal of momentum. Now, there are rumblings that Munguia may possibly face John “The Gorilla” Ryder (32-6, 18 KO’s) next. For his part, The Gorilla is coming off a fairly competitive loss to undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. That defeat snapped a four-fight, two-year win streak that Ryder was enjoying.

On the flip side, Munguia is riding a four-fight knockout streak with the last coming against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in his first and only fight of 2023. Ranked #2 (WBO), #6 (IBF) and #10 (WBC), he is in prime position to challenge for a title. In the end though we will just have to see what manifests next for Munguia. Earlier this year, it was believed that Munguia may face WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo. Clearly however, that match never took place, so stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing to see what pans out of this equation.
