Jaime Munguia vs Sergiy Derevyanchenko Possible WBC Eliminator

Former WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33KO) is looking to fight three-time middleweight title challenger Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko (14-4, 10KO) possibly on June 10.

Munguia has been dropping names of opponents for this date for quite some time. Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn spoke on the possibility of WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol and Munguia previously.

Then team Munguia shifted focus in the direction of two-time unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin. It now seems another candidate has arisen in Derevyanchenko.

A POSSIBLE WBC ELIMINATOR

During an interview on ESNEWS, Munguia answered the question once by a fan before doubling down when asked a second time.

“June 10, Derevyanchenko. I don’t know, maybe Derevyanchenko.”

The irony is the WBC ordered him to fight The Technician twice in 2021. Moreover, the organization can still make this a title eliminator considering they are ranked #2 and #3, respectively.

The boxing community has been screaming for Munguia to fight a quality opponent. Honestly, it depends on which version of Derevyanchenko comes to fight.

Before coming off a victory over Joshua Conley in 2022, he lost three fights in a row, two of which were title shots against Golovkin and WBC champion Jermall Charlo. In 2021 he suffered a close majority decision defeat to Carlos Adames. On one hand, the 37 year-old looked good enough against Golovkin to where many fans thought he won. However, against Charlo, he was thoroughly beaten in what is arguably the WBC champion’s best performance to date.

Munguia hasn’t been in the ring since easily defeating Gonzalo Coria in November 2022. Providing this fight takes place, and he is victorious, fans will be calling for the former junior middleweight to challenge for a world title before the year is out.
