JBC Extends Boxing Suspension In Japan Until April 30
The issue of COVID-19/coronavirus continues to have its effects on boxing on a worldwide scale. Specifically, the impact of this virus outbreak has hit hard in the country of Japan.
We have been on top of the issue of how major events in that country have been put on ice. The Japanese Boxing Commission (JBC) and the Japanese Professional Boxing Association (JBPA) initially decided to suspend boxing activities until March 30, with that suspension being eventually extended up to April 15.
Now the news has gone from bad to worse. According to Asian Boxing, on March 13, the JBC announced that they will once again extend their suspension of the sport. Now it is expected to last through April 30!
AN ALARMING, BUT PREDICTABLE DECISION
Boxing has been placed on a halt in Japan since late-February. At this point, it’s up in the air when significant bouts will occur again in the country. With this being the second time the JBC has extended their suspension, it would not be surprising if the inactivity goes into May, and maybe beyond.
But can you blame the JBC for their decision? We are in anxious times right now as the sport, and society at large continues to cope with COVID-19.
Events have been cancelled and postponed all over the globe due to the outbreak. Boxing commissions all over are taking all precautions necessary to not only protect the fighters, but also the public as a result.
So whether it be boxing in Japan, in America, in Italy, or across the world, the ramifications of this virus are real and should be taken and dealt with very seriously. And if it means we see less fights, so be it.
