Jaron Ennis Scores The Stoppage Against David Avanesyan
In his first title defense, and in a hometown fight, IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (32-0, 29 KO’s) steamrolled game challenger David “Ava” Avanesyan (30-5-1, 18 KO’s) by sixth round TKO. Boots opened the duel jarring Avanesyan with a hard, thumping jab and near sadistic body attack. Also in the first round, after Avanesyan held his head down mid-punch, Ennis blasted him in the crotch with a devilish right hook.
Naturally, Ava went down and remained on all fours before finally finding his feet and resuming the action. From the first to the fifth round, Boots seamlessly switched from orthodox to southpaw stance while forcing Avanesyan into a phonebooth fight all the while smothering him in a diverse medley of head and body shots. On the more critical side, Ennis, in his zeal to chase the knockout, did appear to eat a number of unnecessary clean shots to the jaw.
Toward the end of the fifth period, a straight left to the chin briefly put Avanesyan on the canvas. Yet, showing a warrior’s heart, Ava quickly got up and soldiered on. Nevertheless, when he went to his corner, Ava’s team threw in the towel instead of sending him out to absorb more punishment in the sixth.
