Crowley Out And Ennis Left Hunting for his July 13 Replacement
IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis (31-0, 28KO) is on the hunt for a new opponent as Cody “The Crippler” Crowley (22-0, 9KO) didn’t pass a medical exam. Three options come to mind as Crowley replacements for Ennis on July 13. The names: Jin Sasaki, Karen Chukhadzhian, and Roiman Villa.
The boxing news cycle has been buzzing as The Crippler was pulled from the fight due to an issue with his right eye. Crowley had retina surgery in 2023, and his eye couldn’t pass the minimum requirements of the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission.
After a heated back and forth during the press conference, Ennis promised to give Crowley a beatdown. With the fight possibly in jeopardy, the IBF champion took to social media to assure fans the program would move forward on the scheduled fight date.
WHO COULD GET THE CALL
When looking at the rankings, there are three possible replacements. It’s worth mentioning that Giovanni Santillan and Errol Spence are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. Yet, they are eliminated from the equation as Santillan was recently defeated, and Spence is fighting unified junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora.
Sasaki (17-1-1, 16KO) is the number six-rated contender from Japan who has never fought on American soil. Yet, he created enough buzz around his name, placing him on 3Kings Boxing Prospect Watch in 2023.
Then there is a possible rematch with #7 rated Chukhadzhian (24-2, 13KO) that could take place. In their last encounter, Ennis didn’t lose a round en route to a unanimous decision victory over the Ukrainian. If he gets the call, this would be the perfect time to prove he has grown from their fight in January 2023.
Lastly, there is the #8 rated Villa, who was stopped by the IBF champion in a thriller for the interim title in July 2023. Boxing fans still talk about that fight as Villa tested Ennis’ chin by landing some hard shots.
3Kings Boxing will continue to follow this story as the scramble to find an opponent is underway.
