Jaron Ennis Is Still Far Off From a World Title Shot
Since the beginning of 2022, welterweight contender Jaron “Boots” Ennis (29-0, 27KO) has been ringing the doorbell for a title shot. Unfortunately, the IBF has yet to answer. In addition, his upcoming fight for the IBF Interim title against Karen Chukhadzhian (21-1, 11KO) probably will not lead to a title opportunity with Errol Spence Jr in 2023.
Ennis kicked things off by destroying Custio Clayton in two quick rounds in an IBF title eliminator on May 14. By all accounts, this made the young talent from Philadelphia the number-one contender. Boxing fans have dubbed Boots the newest boogeyman that can defeat either unified champion Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr or WBO champion Terence “Bud” Crawford.
THE IBF SHOULD HAVE PULLED THE TRIGGER
When news dropped that the Spence v Crawford undisputed welterweight bout was canceled, the IBF should have pulled the trigger on ordering Boots as mandatory.
Despite trainer Derek “Bozy” Ennis petitioning the IBF to order his son Boots as mandatory, the organization decided to have Ennis fight for the interim title, which is a joke of the highest order.
The unified champion is going to fight former unified champion Keith “One Time” Thurman in early 2023. Ennis is set to fight for the interim title on January 7. Provided Ennis is victorious, it still won’t guarantee a shot at the title, as talks to make undisputed will interrupt things again. In addition, Boots could find himself waiting until mid-late 2024 for a title shot when factoring in the rematch clauses between Spence Jr and Crawford.
