Jaycob Gomez Stays Undefeated with Decision Over Jose Arellano

In a junior lightweight showdown, Jaycob Gomez’s (10-0-1, 6KO) undefeated record remained intact after scoring a narrow win over Jose Arellano (11-2, 6KO).

The fight started slowly as both men were trying to establish their offense. Yet, Gomez started landing those solid counter-straight left hands. He picked up the pace and landed good body shots followed by hard hooks upstairs.

Arellano found some success by landing the right hand, but he kept getting hit by countershots that caused his nose to start bleeding. It became a back-and-forth battle as both men were making small adjustments. The Puerto Rican used movement and defense to avoid those wild, looping punches. He would spin out before attacking an off-balance Arellano with a flurry of countershots.

The older Mexican was cut from an accidental headbutt, but he continued to come forward behind the jab and launch a flurry of punches. He started to focus more on the body in the closing rounds. It was anyone’s fight; Arellano was throwing and landing more punches, but Gomez landed the more eye-catching shots.

After the final bell, one judge scored it 76-76 even, as the other two saw it 77-75 in favor of Gomez.
This was a good win for the young Puerto Rican who showed he can make adjustments. These kinds of fights are good learning experiences that will help him down the line.
