Mullojonov, Sanford & Jones Tracking Toward Gold Medal Round
The 2024 Olympics in Paris continue to produce new faces as Uzbekistani Lazizbek Mullojonov, Canadian Wyatt Sanford and American Omari Jones inch closer to gold medals.
With the semi-final round coming up in some of the respective weight divisions, the talk of winning a gold medal is always a hot topic. The high honor of winning an Olympic gold medal is the dream of every amateur fighter.
MAKING IT TO THE NEXT ROUND
Sanford is a decorated amateur, having won the Canadian Junior, Youth, and Amateur National championships. He was a proud participant in the Canada vs Puerto Rico tournament with two victories over professional fighter Omar Rosario. His quest for gold fell short in 2020 after losing in the qualifying round. Yet, Sanford has bounced back nicely in the 2024 Olympics with a victory over Ruslan Abdullaev to advance into the lightweight semi-finals.
Mullojonov is a heavyweight who’s been making some noise with dominant performances in the Olympic preliminaries. Furthermore, he has competed in Boxam International and Strandja Memorial tournaments. In addition, he won the 2022 ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championship. He is one fight away from a possible match-up with Loren Alfonso, after defeating Keno Machado to advance to the semi-finals.
Jones competes as a welterweight and is viewed as America’s best chance at winning a gold medal. He made a name for himself in the 2018 Junior Olympics by making it to the finals. In addition, he won the 2020 USA National Championships, the GeeBee, and Gran Pix international tournaments in 2023.
The Floridian caught the eye of several boxing enthusiasts by not losing a single round in the Olympic preliminary round. On July 31, Jones scored a good victory over Chia Wei Kan to advance to the Quarterfinals.
