Shakhram Giyasov Believes Its Time He Gets His World Title Shot

It was a solid effort from number one-ranked welterweight Shakhram ”Wonder Boy” Giyasov (16-0, 9 KOs) as he won a ten-round split decision over the game Miguel Parra on July 31 at the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California. Giyasov feels a world title shot should await him the next time he gets into the ring.

In the early rounds, Parra got off to a solid start. But once the Wonder Boy got his teeth into the action, he landed with various combinations. From the midway point to the final bell, Giyasov controlled the action.

GIVE ME WHAT I EARNED

During the post-fight interview, a relieved Giyasov was questioned about his future. The 31-year-old native of Uzbekistan was clear about what he thinks should be next up.

“The next fight, I’m ready for a title fight . . . I’m ready for all of my career. I want a world title fight. I want to be an undisputed champion . . . This is my dream.”

Giyasov is currently ranked number one by the WBA and WBO at 147. Terence “Bud” Crawford is the current unified WBA and WBO welterweight champion. Crawford is moving up to 154 pounds to challenge WBA junior middleweight champion Israil Madrimov on August 3 in Los Angeles, California. Most insiders strongly feel that Bud will never fight at welterweight again.

Given this reality, there’s a strong possibility that Wonder Boy will get his wish and fight for a world title by the end of this year. One possibility for Giyasov could be a battle with Conor Benn for the vacant WBA crown. Benn is ranked third by the WBA. Additionally, they are both promoted by Matchroom.

The other option would be Giyasov facing the reigning WBO champion, Brian Norman, who is coming off an impressive win over Giovanni Santillan in May 2024. Word on the street is that Norman’s next fight could be against reigning WBO 140-pound champion Teofimo Lopez.

But that doesn’t stop the reality that Wonder Boy is in a tenable and enviable position at 147. He wants to fight for a world title. There’s a very strong likelihood that he will do so by the end of 2024.
