Joseph Hicks Punishes Keon Papillion En Route to Victory
Following a rather gritty action fight, super welterweight fighter Joseph Hicks (12-0, 8 KO’s) defeated Keon Papillion (10-1-1, 7 KO’s) by way of eighth round TKO. For the better part of it, Hicks was able to control the pace and spatial dynamics. Yet, the shorter Papillion garnered his respect through his power.
When successful, Papillion would creep into range behind a high guard, strike or blind with a fast, stiff jab and then follow with his right. This, or wing heavy hooks. While somewhat simplistic, Papillion succeeded in bothering and arguably hurting Hicks with these tactics on several occasions.
In the end however, Hicks managed to both overcome his moments of adversity and overshadow them with his higher volume and connect-rate. Papillion was further burdened when an accidental headbutt in the third caused near instant swelling on his left eye. Hicks’ sticky jab helped speed that swelling as well as bruised and plumped his right eye.
The accumulation of this varied punishment caught up to Papillion in the eighth and final round. No longer able to competently defend himself and under heavy fire, Papillion was retired by his own corner. In doing so, Hicks was awarded the eighth round TKO victory.
