David Benavidez Beats David Morrell By Wide UD
In a highly anticipated grudge match, interim WBC light heavyweight champion David “The Monster” Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) toppled WBA regular champion David Morrell (11-1, 9 KOs) by unanimous decision.
Neither fighter wasted time getting straight to the action in this high-stakes prizefight. Morrell unable to land on a consistent basis struggled offensively throughout the fight. This was due to The Monster’s surprisingly tight defense, which consisted mainly of waist bending and picking off shots with his arms and gloves. Even worse for the Cuban, Benavidez was disturbingly accurate with punches to the head and body.
To his notable credit, while certainly outfoxed, outworked, and outclassed Morrell never gave up or stopped trying to win. Also, he displayed a great gas tank by competing fiercely until the final bell despite looking like the epitome of fatigue in many spots.
Additional controversy manifested itself in a cut on Benavidez’s left eye in round three. In the eleventh round, Morrell was credited with a knockdown before receiving a point deduction for hitting after the bell.
Following a valiant and exciting last stand in the twelfth period, Benavidez claimed the victory by way of unanimous decision with a final tally of 115-111 (twice) and 118-108.
