Josue Vargas easily defeats Salvador Briceno by unanimous decision
Rising junior welterweight prospect Josue “The Prodigy” Vargas (16-1, 9KOs) looked to make a statement against the upset-minded Salvador Briceno (17-5, 11KOs). He was able to do just that in dominant fashion!
In the opening round, the southpaw from the Bronx, New York boxed smoothly utilizing his jab, while countering his taller, slower opponent with right hooks and uppercuts. However, it seemed Vargas wanted to show a little more of his arsenal.
In the very next round, he prompted to turn up the action! Instead of continuing to box, Vargas took the fight to Briceno. Although, electing to fight on the inside allowed some success for the Mexican fighter who would be in range to land shots of his own.
The fight would take move at a similar pace until the fifth round. Here Vargas picked Briceno apart by utilizing his versatility. He mixed things up continuously and his opponent was unable to mount a sustained attack was relegated to just following Vargas around the ring.
A cut over the left eye of Vargas stemming from a clash of heads, sparked an offensive outburst for Briceno in round seven. However, this would come too late.
A dominant performance by Vargas resulted in a well deserved unanimous decision victory. The scores read as 100-90 twice and 99-91.
Vargas improves his record to (17-1, 9KOs).
