Chavez Jr suspended for drug test refusal
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (51-4-1, 33KOs), the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, has been suspended indefinitely by both the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) and the Arizona Boxing and MMA Commission. This stems from his refusal to take a pre-fight VADA drug test leading up to his December 20 bout with Daniel Jacobs (36-3, 30KOs).
The fight with Jacobs was originally to take place in Las Vegas. However, after his refusal of a drug test, NSAC would suspend him temporarily. The fight with Jacobs would inevitably move to Arizona, where Chavez Jr would quit on his stool after round five.
This is the latest in a list of setbacks for Chavez Jr. He has expressed his desire to continue on with his boxing career, even though it’s clear he’s past his best days. Plagued with marijuana issues, weight gain and a lack of discipline, this latest transgression doesn’t come as a total shock.
He’ll have an August 5 hearing where his suspension will be reviewed.
