Katie Taylor Believes Amanda Serrano Was Never Going to Fight Her
When the news was announced that undisputed lightweight champion Katie “KT” Taylor (15-0, 6ko) was going to face seven-divisional champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (38-1-1, 28ko), it had the entire boxing community claiming this was a fight women’s boxing needed.
As well as being a fight that could propel things to new heights for those who have been seeking equality among their male counterparts.
A QUICK LOOK BACK
However once COVID-19 hit, things all over quickly deteriorated. Now it seems that we may never see this fight happen…well at least not this year as Serrano had a very public dispute with British promoter Eddie Hearn.
Serrano took to social media venting her frustrations about not taking pay cut as a result of what she believed to be bad business deals done on her behalf without her knowledge.
Taylor was also frustrated by all of this and responded to the claims made by the seven-division champion saying “No more excuses!”
Now the boxing community had hoped that cooler heads would prevail with the fight would taking place as planned. Unfortunately with Serrano pulling out, Team Taylor has gone to “plan B.”
THE REMATCH
Hearn went back to the drawing board and came up with an excellent “plan B”. A rematch between Taylor with former WBC champion Delfine Persoon (44-2, 18).
In their first fight in 2019, many felt the Belgian champion beat Taylor. However, the judges would score it a majority decision for the Irish undisputed champion which came with some controversy.
Persoon went to appeal the decision, but the ruling was upheld. She vied for a rematch ever since!
MOVING ON WITHOUT SERRANO
Now that the focus for team Taylor has shifted, Matchroom Boxing has released a snippet of an exclusive interview with the champ that will air on July 26.
The undisputed champion not only feels Serrano never wanted to fight her but believes that Persoon is a better fight anyway.
“It was hugely disappointing. I’m not sure if she had any intentions on stepping into the ring with me really.
“We secured another huge fight. This fight against Persoon is an even bigger fight than Serrano. Really It’s a tougher fight as well.
“I just want to be involved in big fights as I said so to get the Persoon fight after Serrano pulled out was fantastic for me.”
