Coach Kenny Ellis Says Tank Davis vs Isaac Cruz 2 Ends By Stoppage

Nearly two years ago, Regular WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KO’s) secured a unanimous decision win over Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz (24-2-1, 17 KO’s). Even though he was victorious, Davis had his hands very full with Cruz. So much so that Pitbull, who entered the match in obscurity, emerged with a healthy buzz surrounding his name. Now, Tank and crew would love a rematch to put the record straight. This is a sentiment reinforced by one of Davis’s corner men, coach Kenny Ellis.

In a recent story that 3Kings Boxing covered, chief second Calvin Ford also expressed interest in running it back with Pitbull. During his time on the mic, Ford talked about making Cruz a star and was a bit vague about trouble that Davis had going into that fight. Coach Ellis, on the hand, was far more straightforward while speaking with Mill City Boxing.

“We went 12 rounds with him with one hand. He came into the fight with one hand. Some things in camp we know as a team that Gervonta wasn’t 100%, but he still out-boxed Cruz with one hand. If he was 100%, it wouldn’t have went the distance.”

ROUND TWO PLEASE?!

On the one hand, it’s perfectly understandable to want to show your best face following a shaky performance. On the other hand though, very few people are checking for Davis vs Cruz 2. Especially since Tank is coming off his latest knockout victory over Ryan Garcia. The two combined their impressive followings to earn the fifth highest grossing gate in Las Vegas history. Naturally, the boxing public would love to see Tank mix it up with another top name in the sport, or at least the stiffest competition available.

Despite enjoying a great deal more notoriety since his duel with Tank, Cruz has not parlayed his visibility into any major fights. In fact, after Davis, Pitbull has only fought a forgettable Eduardo Ramirez and a near-ancient Yuriorkis Gamboa. In both contests, Cruz prevailed by knockout. By the sound of it, both Pitbull and Tank seem as though they would enjoy a rematch. At the same time, Gervonta Davis versus Isaac Cruz 2 probably will not provide the fans with the most bang for their buck.

In Tank’s defense however, three of the top guys, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney, are all tied up with fights of their own.
