Kenshiro Teraji Maneuvering Toward A World Flyweight Title

Kenshiro “The Amazing Boy” Teraji (23-1, 14 KOs) is one of boxing’s best fighters in the lower-weight divisions. But with news surfacing that he’s planning to campaign as a flyweight, the question begs: will he continue to be as successful at the higher weight?

Teraji was the unified WBC and WBA champion at junior flyweight, yet 3kingsboxing.com has learned that he has vacated those titles and has reached out to WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman. He’s done so to request fighting for the vacant WBC world flyweight title.

The last time Teraji was in the ring, he squeezed out a close and disputed victory over Carlos Canizales in January 2024. Teraji had long attempted to set up a unification fight with the reigning WBO junior flyweight champion, Jonathan Gonzalez. Unfortunately, the negotiations were a long and frustrating process. With The Amazing Boy’s increasing difficulty getting down to the 108-pound junior flyweight limit, it’s apparent that Teraji has had enough and decided to move on.

HOW WILL HE FARE AT 112?

On the surface, moving up to flyweight is perfect timing for Teraji. The 32-year-old from Japan had fought his entire career at 108 and done yeoman’s work in that division. He has nothing else to prove at junior flyweight.

A look at flyweight reveals a division that’s in transition. Unified 112-pound champion Jesse Rodriguez is moving back up to junior bantamweight. In May 2024, the previous WBC flyweight champion, Julio Cesar Martinez, announced his intentions to campaign at junior bantamweight. That leaves the division wide open.

Teraji should have no problems carrying his power up to 112. With his size and experience, the road seems paved for the now-former junior flyweight to have plenty of success at 112. Look for Teraji to fight Francisco Rodriguez Jr. or Cristofer Rosales for the vacant WBC flyweight title.
