Kosei Tanaka wants unification with Estrada after Ioka
There is every reason for the boxing community and casual fans to be excited about the little guys, especially since the super flyweight division has two mega-fights that are taking place.Three-divisional champion Kosei Tanaka (15-0, 9ko) will face fellow countryman WBO super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka (25-2, 14ko) to close out the year. In addition, the unification bout in 2021 puts WBC champion Juan Francisco Estrada (41-3, 28ko) in the 2012 rematch against WBA champion Roman Gonzalez (50-2, 41ko).
Now, according to Asian Boxing News, Tanaka is very confident he will be victorious. In that event, he wants to fight Estrada. However, first, the WBC champion needs to get the nod in the upcoming unification bout next year.
That means in 2021, we will be one fight away from crowning the first-ever undisputed super flyweight champion. Equally important, Tanaka would probably look to fight Gonzalez also, if he is the victor. Either way, it will be a huge fight regardless of the opponent. Furthermore, let us not leave out the IBF title holder Jerwin Ancajas (32-1-2,22ko). He is the longest reigning champion of the division, and will undoubtedly keep a close eye on how his rival champions are moving.
Pump the brakes because there is still the matter of defeating the WBO champion, and that is easier said than done. Moreover, Ioka is a two-divisional champion, and he has one of the best resumes in the division. Assuredly, he may feel some kind of way with Tanaka looking over him down the road at future fights.
Now is the time for fans to brush up on the lower weight divisions. Next year, these guys are about to explode with big high stakes fights.
