Leo Santa Cruz vs Leigh Wood Deal Reached!
The wish of WBA regular 126-pound champion Leigh “Leigh-Thal” Wood (26-2, 16KOs) has been granted! Not long after his sensational 12th round knockout of Michael Conlan, Wood made it clear that WBA “super” featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (38-2-1, 19KOs) was who he wanted to face next.
Their purse bid, which for August 12, was canceled after both sides reached an agreement. The news, which was broken by the WBA themselves, means this fight will likely happen in the fall or winter later this year.
Both sides can breathe easily now that a deal is done. Initially, tt didn’t appear that this fight would get made. The promoter of Wood, Eddie Hearn, voiced his displeasure with the 75-25 split in favor of Santa Cruz, stating he felt his fighter deserved a bigger piece of the pie.
This led him to offer a proposal to the WBA that would allow both men to have an interim bout then fight in 2023. However, his request was denied by the WBA. This fight has the potential to be an action-packed brawl as both men have fan-friendly styles and good power.
The date and location of the fight has yet to be determined. 3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the story and provide updates as they become available.
