Liam Smith Responds To Allegations That His Win Over Chris Eubank Jr Is Tainted

Liam “Beefy” Smith (33-3-1, 19 KOs) refuses to let anything or anyone take away from his fourth-round stoppage over Chris Eubank Jr (32-2, 23 KOs), not even recent allegations of foul play. Word on the street is Eubank is considering filing an appeal to the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) after now claiming Smith was guilty of using an illegal elbow.

Smith feels the allegations are “rubbish” and said the following during an interview with Sky Sports.

“You lost, you got stopped, come back from it. Nobody believes you. You’re embarrassing yourself.”

Smith’s victory over Eubank on January 21 was one of the biggest of his career. During the lead-up, there was plenty of bad blood. Afterward, there seemed to be mutual respect between the two. Eubank congratulated his adversary on the win, said he got caught with a good shot, and called for a rematch.

STOP COMPLAINING

Eubank’s promoter Kalle Sauerland and trainer Roy Jones Jr suggest that the win was controversial. As far as Smith is concerned, there is a more obvious way to settle the dispute.

“Go file your complaint by all means. If that’s the case, just take the rematch. What are you waiting for? You’ve got three or four weeks to activate the rematch clause. If it was caused by an elbow, go ahead and activate it and let’s move on.”

As of this writing, it is unknown whether Eubank will file an official protest. If he does, there’s no guarantee that the BBBofC would reverse the decision. Many observers hope cooler heads will prevail and both camps can negotiate a rematch at some point later this year.
