Jorge Linares dispatches Abner Cotto in 3 rounds

In his junior welterweight debut, former WBA and ring magazine lightweight champion Jorge Linares made easy work of veteran Abner Cotto.

The opening round showed both guys come out jabbing and mixing their shots up to the body and head. Linares’ hand-speed and accuracy was evident in the opening stanza.

With 54 seconds left in the second round, a perfectly placed straight right hand from Linares would drop his opponent.

One could sense that the end may be near for Cotto in the third round. A three punch combination from would send the Puerto Rican down again.

A few moments later, Cotto stopped mid-action to complain to the referee. Linares saw this as an opportunity to attack and jumped on his opponent with a vicious flurry of punches. Cotto would hit the canvas again causing the referee to waive the fight off.

The former lineal champion improves his record to (45-4, 28KOs). There’s a lot of opportunities for the former champion at 140. Jose Ramirez, Maurice Hooker, Regis Prograis, Josh Taylor are all some names to look at as potential opponents down the line.

However, he has been vocal about getting a Vasyl Lomachenko rematch, therefore, we may see him move back down to lightweight.
