Lomachenko v Lopez unification coming in September?
Lightweight champions Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (14-1, 10KOs) and Teofimo “El Brooklyn” Lopez (15-0, 12KOs) share the same goal once boxing returns. That is to face each other in their first fights of 2020. According to their promoter Bob Arum, neither man is interested in interim fights.
These two men were hoping and expecting to fight on May 30. At least until the COVID-19 pandemic wrecked those plans, as the disease swept through the United States. Now with restrictions slowly being lifted, both fighters and their promoter have set sights on a September date to be determined.
Lomachenko holds the WBA and WBO lightweight titles and is the WBC franchise champion for 135. He hasn’t fought since winning a unanimous decision over Luke Campbell (20-3, 16KOs) for the then-vacant WBC title. As for Lopez, he hasn’t fought since stopping Richard Commey (29-3, 26KOs) in two rounds in December to win the IBF title in only his fifteenth fight.
If a deal is reached, this unification bout would give boxing a big boost right out of the gate. Due to the nature of this bout, it is likely to be held on pay-per-view, as stated by Bob Arum.
3kingsboxing.com will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
