The WBC has ordered Vasyl Lomchenko to face Luke Campbell for the vacant title!
In a drastic turn of events, the WBC turns down the appeal to allow lightweight phenom Devin Haney to face Luke Campbell for the vacant title and granted unified champion Vasyl Lomachenko the opportunity instead!
Recently, Haney signed a co-promotional deal with Matchroom Boxing and joined DAZN as a featured fighter. One of the sticking points that lured the fighter to DAZN was an opportunity to fight for a title soon.
Since the #2 ranked contender Zaur Abdullaev would not be able to face Campbell due to religious obligations (Ramadan), Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn felt Haney at #3 should get the nod. The two had even agreed to fight each other in July barring the new DAZN member would win his debut on May 25.
Now all of this seems to be “up in smoke!” Lomachenko had filed his own appeal to urge the WBC to allow him to face Campbell for the vacant title to aid his journey to become the undisputed champion. The unified champion at one point had been in line to face newly crowned IBF champion Richard Commey in April. However, the latter suffered a hand injury in his February title bout that sidelined him for six to eight weeks.
With hopes of getting the now former WBC champion Mikey Garcia in the ring, he targeted an opportunity fight for the title’s vacancy.
There is no word on when this fight will take place. We could assume the agreed upon date between Campbell and Haney of July 27 could be in play. 3kingsboxing.com will monitor this story and provide relevant updates in the future!
