Teofimo Lopez Suggests Tank and Crawford Lack Self-Confidence
At the moment, WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (21-1, 13 KO’s) is looking for his next opponent. If the boxing gods bent to his will, Lopez would challenge himself with either WBA 154-pound champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31 KO’s) or WBA 135-pound champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28 KO’s). Yet, let him tell it, this won’t happened because neither of these competitors have the internal drive to make the duel a reality.
Lopez expounded on these thoughts while providing a brief Q&A to Fight Hype:
“I would go Crawford first and then we can talk about Tank. Both of them have holes and I think the main hole that they have – they both don’t believe in themselves!”
GLASS HOMES AND TOSSED STONES
Naturally, there will be scores of folks in the boxing world who will take issue with this. The biggest reason being, of these three men, Lopez is the only one who has literally been caught on the mic doubting himself! In fact over the past three years, The Takeover has lost more steam and credibility than anything else.
This began with his loss to George Kambosos and what many believe were gift divisions against Sandor Martin and Jamaine Ortiz. It was during the aftermath of the Martin bout that The Takeover was caught questioning himself. In his last match, it’s widely believed that Lopez should have done much better versus the little known Steve Claggett. Over the past three years, the only real glimmer of positivity has come in the form of his victory over Josh Taylor.
This is why, despite holding a title, at the moment, Lopez’s stock is probably about as low as it’s ever been. Which is why throwing stones at arguably the face of boxing in Tank and arguably the best boxer on the planet, in Crawford, will probably not yield the results he is looking for.
KEEP CHASING
Presently, Bud is hunting down a potential duel with unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. That move that would require him to leap up two more divisions after having just moved up to super welterweight. One would be hard pressed to find the lack of self-belief in chasing this particular match.
Of the two fighters in question though, Lopez has spent more time recently trying to drum up a prizefight with Crawford. Sadly for him however, it does not appear that Bud is very interested in this match. Yet, perhaps once he hears this latest sound bite, Crawford may put a new priority into facing Lopez. Going by the recent past though, this is not a smart bet!
