Lopez wins in stiff test; Return set for September 30
Twenty year-old Undefeated young bantamweight prospect Melvin Lopez was heavily tested by Jose Cardenas.
In a tough fight won by unanimous decision, he was forced to show more dimensions of his boxing ability. In addition, his chin was also put to the test as his opponent is known for his power.
Cardenas (21), appeared to be in his most noticeable contest to date, immediately let it be known he came to fight. He showed his opponent a lot of angles and movement winning the early rounds.
He also applied constant pressure and cut off the ring using effective aggression. However, it was Lopez’s good defense and patience that helped him capture the vacate WBA-NABA Bantamweight title.
Interesting Facts
Lopez also has won both the WBC Youth and Latino Super-Flyweight titles. Although he resides in Miami, has only fought twice in the US.
Cardenas was fighting for his first title of any kind while making his first appearance in the US. This was only his third opponent with a winning record and all three were undefeated.
The champion is already scheduled to face Jhunriel Ramonal (14-8-4, 7KO) of the Philippines September 30. After going ten rounds with Cardenas, hopefully a month is enough time for him to recover.
