Teofimo Lopez tests positive for COVID-19; fight with George Kambosos postponed

Unified lightweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (16-0, 12KOs) has tested positive for COVID-19. In doing so, his first title defense against unbeaten mandatory challenger George “Ferocious” Kambosos (19-0, 10KOs) has now been postponed until August 14. The timing could not be any worse, as this was the week they were supposed to fight.

Lopez is the significant favorite heading into this matchup. He will now reshuffle as he heads into quarantine to allow time for the virus to pass. For Kambosos, this has to be a huge blow. He has recently proclaimed his readiness to pull off an enormous upset. It will be interesting to see how this affects both men come fight night. This is the second time this fight has been pushed back. They were originally scheduled to face each other on June 5, before settling on the June 19 date.
