Teofimo Lopez Focusing in on Lomachenko
When Teofimo “El Brooklyn” Lopez (15-0, 12 KO’s) slid through the ropes to tangle with IBF world lightweight champion Richard “RC” Commey (29-3, 26 KO’s), he was supposed to be tested. Not only was he supposed to be tested, it was a common belief that Lopez would suffer his first defeat.
OFF WITH THIS HEAD!!
Apparently El Brooklyn came to the ring in a Highlander, ‘there can be only one’ type of mood. In the second round, after an intense opening round, Lopez all but beheaded Commey with a devastating right-hand. Actually, both men threw matching rights simultaneously. However, only Lopez threw his true. Commey displayed world class durability and grit when he managed to find his feet.
Although upright, Commey was in no condition to competently defend himself. Lopez pounced on him with the naked ferocity of agitated Black Friday customers. In short order, El Brooklyn pent RC to the ropes and smothered him in crackling blows. Referee David Fields was left no recourse other than to halt the action.
Now armed with the IBF world lightweight title, Lopez has set his eyes and attention to Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KO’s). Well, in all actuality, El Brooklyn has long since been talking about a showdown with Hi-Tech. Thus far however, it’s the nimble Ukrainian who has shown little interest in fighting Lopez.
“[on a fight with Lomachenko] Honestly that’s been in the works, everybody’s been talking about it. You know I think that’s why a lot of people really wanted this fight to be the way it was, you know? Teofimo win by knockout, or whatever it is, look impressive so that we can make a big fight like that happen. I think you guys already know the month, April 2020.
All we got to do now is just go back to the board and talk to my manager, talk to Top Rank, talk to my father and work the numbers and make the fight happen.”
BOSS TO BOSS BEEF
In the past, Hi-Tech has questioned why he should be obligated to take Lopez seriously. In his estimation, Lopez brought nothing to the table having no belts or collected any serious scalps as a professional. Both of those criticisms burnt to ash like July barbecue coals in the belly of Madison Square Garden.
With Teofimo Lopez usurping the IBF belt in such mauling fashion, new attention and consideration must be given to a Lomachenko v Lopez prizefight. No longer is this simply a champion entertaining a talented upstart, but rather a unification bout between two capable bruisers. Luckily, Lomachenko was in the audience for the brutal undressing.
Whether he was being candid, or simply put on the spot, Hi-Tech did express real interest in penning a fight with Teofimo Lopez. This has always been a fun fight to daydream about, but now it’s a money bout that makes legacy and business sense. Hopefully both men remain serious about trading leather in the very near future.
3kingsboxing will stay on top of this potentially electric unification bout.
“Who knows, Madison Square Garden? I would love to have it back here, back home, what?! Please!
Yea, but this time he [Lomachenko] can sell out an arena!”
