Gabriel Maestre and Mykal Fox set to duel for WBA interim welterweight title
Despite coming in off a loss, welterweight Mykal “The Professor” Fox (22-2, 5 KO’s) is set to challenge for the Interim WBA welterweight title. Fox, 25, will fight Gabriel Maestre (3-0, 3 KO’s) to determine who walks away with the belt. In his last outing, The Professor dropped a unanimous decision loss to Lucas Santamaria back on August 7, 2020. Even with the recent defeat, Fox is currently ranked #12 (WBA).
Naturally, a lot is at stake for the Maryland native. Capturing the title would radically redirect the trajectory of his career in a very beneficial manner. This would be tremendously fortunate given that Maestre was originally supposed to face Cody Crowley. Crowley was forced to withdraw, having contracted COVID-19.
With only a trio of professional fights on his ledger, the Venezuelan boxer has garnered the very favorable ranking of #4 (WBA). In fact, the majority of his credentials stem from his amateur background. Prior to turning professional, Maestre, 34, competed in the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympic, as well as medaled in the 2013 World Championships, 2015 and 2019 Pan American games. He considered participating in the 2020 Olympic games and was even going to serve as the captain of his national team. Instead, he opted to pour all his efforts into his professional career. His bout with Fox will also serve as his American debut.
