Charles Martin stops Gerald Washington in six
Former IBF heavyweight champion Charles Martin (28-2-1, 25KOs) and former WBC world title challenger Gerald Washington (20-4-1, 13KOs) would square-off in an IBF final eliminator. The winner will be in line for another world title opportunity sometime down the line.
Once the bell rang, it was evident that this fight would be one of great patience. With neither guy willing to open up, in particular Washington, the fight had many dull and inactive periods.
To his credit however, Martin was the aggressor, at least attempting to force the action as he pressed forward. That would lead him to often being countered by the overly cautious Washington.
TKO OUT OF NOWHERE!
Just as it seemed destined for round six to be another lackluster round in the books, Martin and an overhand left would change that very swiftly! Catching the unsuspecting Washington would be a powerful punch from the southpaw former champion that would send his timid opponent crashing to the canvas. Washington, to his credit, would rise to his feet, but would not be allowed to continue. Referee Tony Weeks would call the fight after seeing Washington clearly hurt.
With the win, Martin is now in the drivers seat for another shot at the title he briefly held back in 2016 before losing to unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (23-1, 21KOs) by devastating knockout.
As for Washington, this appears to be the end of the road for him as he suffers his fourth loss in his career, which all have been by knockout.
