The Comeback Continues: Sergio Martinez v Macaulay McGowan On January 27
Former middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (54-3-2, 30KOs) will continue his comeback on Thursday January 27 against Macaulay McGowan (14-2-1, 3KOs). This will be the fourth fight of his comeback since August of 2020. In his last bout, he defeated Brian Rose (32-8-1, 8KOs) by unanimous decision.
Since ending his six-year retirement, Martinez has continued to shake off ring rust accumulated by his injury-enforced retirement. However, now with a clean bill of health, the Argentine great is looking to recapture his past middleweight glory.
His UK-based foe, McGowan, will look to stymie the progression of the 46-year-old former champion. Virtually nothing indicates McGowan as a legitimate threat to Maravilla. Still, his resume does indicate his durability. In seventeen career fights, McGowan has never been knocked out.
If victorious, it’ll be interesting to see what’s the next route for Martinez. Will he step his competition up and fight a world-ranked contender? We will have to wait and see. For the time being, it appears he’s just trying to stay active and continue to build confidence.
