Mikaela Mayer Targeting Big Fights Outside of Baumgardner
Had events played out the way that she wanted them to, super featherweight boxer Mikaela Mayer (17-1, 5 KO’s) would be one belt away from being undisputed. If she’d won her last match versus IBF, WBO and WBC 130-pound champion Alycia Baumgardner (13-1, 7 KO’s), that would have been the case. Instead, the former unified champion was beaten by split decision and forced to begin rebuilding her career. Yet, as she explained to Fight Hype, of course Mayer would love a rematch but she is not about to hold her breath waiting on one.
“It hurt, I’m not going to lie. I’ve been going through it for the last couple of weeks but I’ve pulled myself together and I think now I just want to continue on my journey of making big fights. And I don’t think that Alycia Baumgardner is the only big fight for me, there’s a ton of big fights for me.”
WHO’S THE NEXT DANCE PARTNER?
While Mayer insists that she will not lower herself by begging for a rematch, she is not above questioning Baumgarnder’s heart and character.
“I don’t want to lose my position at 130, at the same time, because I do believe I deserve a rematch. And not just for me, but I think if Baumgardner was a true champion, she wouldn’t want to leave it in suspense – there are a lot of doubters. So if she really wants to make that sound and make her the real champion, then she should rematch me and the fans want it!”
Now when, or if, Mayer can get a second crack at The Bomb is still up in the air, but she can promise that she is only considering serious fights.
“An ‘0’ shouldn’t define your career. You should be willing to put your ass on the line and fight the best. And people should stop being afraid of losing their ‘0.’ So now I got to walk the walk. I lost my ‘0’ and that’s okay, that doesn’t change the goal. That doesn’t change what I want for my legacy and that is to make the biggest fights possible. So my next fight, there is no filler fights. There is no ‘let me maintain’ fights, none of that. We are only going for the big fights!”
At the moment, events are shifting into place for Baumgardner to stage a high stakes bout versus WBA super featherweight champion Hyun-Mi Choi for undisputed. If that does indeed take place, it will be interesting to see who Mayer pens her next bout with. Thankfully, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news no matter whoever it is.
