Mayer Can Opt for Lauren Price or Oshae Jones for Undisputed
On October 30, Mikaela Mayer traveled to Canada and scored an easy win over then-WBA junior middleweight champion Mary Spencer. The newly crowned unified champion received high marks from the judges’ scorecards of 98-92 (twice) and 100-90.
Mayer is in a very unique position in being able to fight for the undisputed crown at either welterweight and junior middleweight. She currently holds the WBO title, which puts her in the crosshairs of unified champion Lauren Price. In addition, the Californian could choose to take on IBF junior middleweight champion Oshae Jones.
It’s not an easy decision, as both Price and Jones are talented boxers with high accolades in amateur boxing. The IBF champion is a solid fighter who almost matches Mayer in height and reach. This would make for an interesting fight as both women like using the jab. Moreover, Jones beat Spencer in the amateurs, as well.
In this author’s opinion, the smart money would be on Price. The unified champion is better known and has a large following in the United Kingdom. Also, she has expressed wanting to become undisputed, calling out Mayer after defeating multi-division champion Natasha Jonas. They both have a common opponent in one-time champion Sandy Ryan. Mayer defeated the one-time champion twice, but Price lost to Ryan in the amateurs in 2017.
Boxing fans can only wait to see who will be the next undisputed champion at either welterweight or junior middleweight.
