Braekhus v McCaskill
In DAZN’s highly anticipated main event title fight, undisputed world welterweight champion “First Lady” Cecilia Braekhus (36-1, 9 KO’s) lost a shocking upset defeat to WBC and WBA world super lightweight champion Jessica “CasKILLA” McCaskill (9-2, 3 KO’s) by way of majority decision. Braekhus was hoping to break heavyweight fighter Joe Louis’s long standing 25 fight title defense record in this fight. Obviously, that just went up in smoke.
Once in the ring, the height and reach advantage enjoyed by Braekhus was hard to miss. Using those physical attributes, the First Lady was largely able to control the opening round with her jab. Following two forgettable rounds, McCaskill begins to show real life and throw snapping punches in the third.
Braekhus still had the upper hand when CasKILLA was trying to get in striking distance. However, once on the inside, McCaskill did very well. Despite her growing success, one technical flaw that the super lightweight champion consistently committed was dipping her head down and bending over at the waist. Overall, the next couple rounds remained very neck and neck and difficult to score.
During the final three periods, Braekhus came off as the more polished looking boxer. Both were landing with regularity. Yet, McCaskill spent so much time bent over and winging wild shots that it was hard to not view the First Lady as being in control. At no point in the ten rounds did either woman go down or seriously hurt the other.
Despite appearing to finish the bout strong, one judge saw a draw and the other awarded the victory, and all those titles, to Jessica “CasKILLA” McCaskill!
During the post-fight interview, Braekhus was clearly broken-hearted but took the loss with tremendous grace. She offered zero excuses and gave McCaskill all her credit. When asked if she wanted a rematch, the First Lady did not indicate if she wanted a rematch or if she would even fight again.
