Julian Smith Shocks Shohjahon Ergashev By Split Decision
In a fight that was very cat-and-mouse in nature, super lightweight Julian “The Quiet Storm” Smith (9-2, 5 KO’s) upset Shohjahon “The Descendant of Tamerlane” Ergashev (24-2, 21 KO’s) by way of split decision.
Smith got off to a quicker start, pressed the action, and was the first to find a rhythm with those right hands. He dropped southpaw Ergashev with a crispy right hook on the chin in the closing moments of the second round. Yet, amazingly it was not ruled a knockdown.
Through the fifth round, The Descendant of Tamerlane worked his way back into the fight by finally finding the range for the left hand.
Although, once again, in the closing moments of the fifth, The Quiet Storm dropped Ergashev with a sturdy left hook. To the chagrin of the crowd that frequently booed throughout the contest, nothing of great variation or overt excitement took place before the final bell.
The two men maintained their steady and methodical pace until the fight ended. As the fight went to the scorecards, one judge saw it 95-94 Ergashev, overruled by the other two judges who saw it 95-94 for Smith.
