Mayer vs Baumgarner Set On The Claressa Shields vs Savannah Marshall Undercard

3KingsBoxing has previously reported that unified women’s lightweight champion Mikaela Mayer (17-0, 5 KOs) and WBC champ Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner (12-1, 7 KOs) agreed to terms for a 130-pound unification showdown. Here’s an update with more details on when and where the fight will take place.

According to ESPN, the battle will occur on September 10 at the O2 Arena in London, England. Here’s the juicy kicker. It will happen on the undercard of the undisputed women’s middleweight fight between unified champion Claressa Shields and WBO champion Savannah Marshall. In reaction to the news, Baumgardner left the following messages on social media.

TARGETING ONE ANOTHER

The two junior lightweight champions have been on a collision course. Baumgardner made a big splash when she stopped former WBC champ Terri Harper in four rounds in November 2021. In December of that year, “The Bomb” signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom promotions. She followed with an easy, unanimous decision win over previous two-time featherweight champion Edith Soledad Matthyssse in April.

Mayer is the prized women’s fighter on the Top Rank roster. She won the WBO title with a decisive unanimous decision over former champ Ewa Brodnicka in October 2020. After defending that belt by defeating ex-lightweight and junior welterweight champ Erica Anabella Farias in June 2021, Mayer faced then-IBF junior lightweight champ Maiva Hamadouche in November 2021.

In a candidate for “fight of the year”, they went to war for ten rounds. Full of back and forth action, the ladies barely took a backward step. Ultimately, Mayer received a hard-fought unanimous decision win to become the unified champion. Her last outing was also in April as she defended her titles with a ten-round decision, besting ex-featherweight champion Jennifer Han.

NO FAKE BEEF

Mayer and Baumgardner do not like each other. They’ve engaged in a series of insults during interviews and on social media. On paper, it already shapes up as an excellent match, one in which pundits will find it hard to pick a favorite. Add in their blood towards each other and you have the potential for real fireworks once the bell rings. With this fight alongside Shields vs Marshall, September 10 will be a monster night for women’s boxing.
