Mikaela Mayer Walks Away The Champion Over Sandy Ryan
In an instant classic welterweight title fight, Mikaela Mayer (20-2, 5KO) walked away as the new WBO champion after defeating Sandy Ryan (7-2-1, 3KO).
Both fighters came out fighting behind the jab. Ryan came forward behind and started going to the body to slow down the movement of the former unified lightweight champion. Yet, Mayer returned fire landing a hard right hand that buckled Ryan’s legs momentarily. She even did a good job of fighting off the backfoot while scoring with the right hand.
With only two-minute rounds, the women kept going to work immediately following the bell. Mayer fought smart avoiding the left hook by circling away from it. Yet, Ryan came roaring back with combination shots after cutting off the ring and landed a punishing left hand that halted Mayer’s momentum.
This fight broke down into a brawl. Both women were throwing bombs as Mayer tried to move. However, Ryan was landing the right hand, repeatedly taking advantage of the challenger’s lack of head movement.
When the fight ended, one judge scored it 95-95, as the other two had it 96-94 and 97-93 in favor of Mayer. 3Kings Boxing agrees with the first scorecard.
