Jaime Munguia Snags Quick Third Round Knockout Over D’mitrius Ballard
In his latest in-ring tour of duty, former super welterweight champion Jaime Munguia (39-0, 31 KO’s) claimed his freshest scalp. This time he collected a third round knockout win over D’Mitrius “Big Meech” Ballard (21-1-1, 13 KO’s). Heading into the match, Ballard had maintained a patchy activity level. The Maryland native had only competed once late in 2021 and not at all in 2020. Two of his three matches in 2019 ended in a draw and no contest.
To his credit, Munguia fought twice in 2021, 2020 and three times in 2019. With this latest victory, Munguia, who is ranked #1 (WBO), #1 (WBC), #2 (WBA) and #12 (IBF), are in prime position to challenge for a world title. Well in all honesty, he could have definitely challenged WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade for this title a long time ago but opted not to. Now that Andrade is moving up in weight though, it’ll be interesting to see if Munguia attempts to fight for that belt.
ONE-WAY POWER
The opening rounds were fought at a slower pace which seemed to initially slightly favor Ballard. Big Meech did well utilizing his feet and orbiting the ring for the first two rounds. Then in the third round, Munguia caught Ballard flush on the chin with a powerful left hook that snapped his head violently.
Big Meech kept his feet but was instantly hurt and instinctively drifted backwards into a corner. With his back pent to the straps, Munguia splayed Ballard out on his belly with an additional flurry of punches. Still badly impaired, the Maryland native made it to his feet yet was in no condition to competently defend himself. So, Munguia once again stuck his foe against the ropes with punches. The referee jumped in to save him from any more punishment. It will be interesting to see who Munguia fights next!
