Frank Warren Optimistic Tyson Fury Fights Oleksandr Usyk in 2023!
WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) has an opponent for his upcoming bout in December. During an interview with iFL TV, Fury’s co-promoter, Frank Warren, revealed that Fury’s next bout will be a trilogy bout with Dereck Chisora (33-12, 23 KOs).
“We’ve been struggling to get an opponent, and we got the highest-ranked opponent in boxrec which is now Dereck Chisora. That’s where we’ll be going, and that will be on December 3.”
Many may ask: why are they fighting again? According to Warren, this is the first step of something much bigger down the line.
LONG-TERM STRATEGY
“What it’s all about is that Tyson had one fight in a year, and we always were expecting the fight in December would be Usyk, but Usyk wasn’t available. Now it looks like, I hope, it will be going on sometime in February (2023). So Tyson wants a fight before then. He wants to get out, and we want to get him out, and that’s where we’re at.”
Warren is referring to unified champion Oleksandr Usyk’s (20-0, 13 KOs) rematch victory over Anthony Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs). In August 2022, the unified heavyweight champ said Fury is who he wants to face next. But the caveat was that he needed to recover from lingering injuries. As a result, a fight with Fury could not happen in December of this year. The WBC champ responded by insulting Usyk on social media.
Based on Warren’s comments, there is optimism we could see them fight for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world early next year. Fury has to take care of business against Chisora in December. However, if everything comes together, the seeds are being planted for what is arguably the biggest fight in boxing and one of the biggest events in all sports.
