Hassan N’Dam NJikam forges on in hopes of another world title opportunity!
Former WBA and WBO Interim middleweight champion and former WBA ‘Regular’ middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam NJikam (38-5, 21KOs) returned to the squared circle for the the first time in nearly two years. In doing so, he would pick up a eight-round points decision win over Gabor “Squirrel” Gorbics (26-20-1, 16KOs).
The bout was the former middleweight champion’s first fight since December of 2019. It also happened to be his first win since defeating Martin Murray back in December of 2018.
WHAT DOES THE WIN MEAN AND DOES HE HAVE MUCH LEFT?!
To be quite honest, the win does very little, at least right now. His opponent was merely chosen as someone for NJikam to shake off the rust. This was evident by the horrendous record Gorbics brought into their fight. Currently unranked in all four major sanctioning body organizations at super middleweight, he needs to get in with and beat bigger and higher ranked opponents if he wants one last world title opportunity.
In terms of how much NJikam has left to offer the sport, I’d say not very much. This is withstanding him being a proven solid fighter with tons of experience. He also has a lot of mileage on his 37-year-old body. Having only been knocked out twice, he’s proven to be very durable even though he’s notoriously known for being knocked down multiple times in a lot of his fights throughout his career.
Speaking of super middleweight, his last title opportunity came against former WBA and ring magazine super middleweight champion Callum Smith (27-1, 19KOs) in June of 2019. He was knocked out in three rounds.
At this point, he’s relegated to gatekeeper status and that’s being generous. With a crowded super middleweight division, it’s simply too hard to see him being able to compete at this point in his career. But this is boxing and we’ve seen the unexpected happen before.
