Ohara Davies Enters WBA Title Picture Following Decision on Romero vs Barroso
The WBA has added the junior welterweight title to the upcoming Rolando “Rolly” Romero versus Ismael Barroso (24-3-2, 22KO) fight on May 13. Furthermore, top contender Ohara “Two Tanks” Davies (25-2, 18K) is excited about the recent ruling, as he will face the winner.
When champion Alberto Puello tested positive for a banned substance leading up to the fight with Romero, it was only a matter of time before the organization removed him as champion.
SEVERAL FIGHTER’S TO BENEFIT FROM THE WBA’S RECENT RULING
With Romero-Barroso close at hand, the WBA Championship Committee decided to take the belt away from Puello. Moreover, they added Davies’s name to the mix by honoring the title eliminator results.
“The World Boxing Association declared the Dominican Alberto Puello as 140-pound champion in recess, after he tested positive for a banned substance, according to the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency. Therefore, the fight between Rolando Romero and Ismael Barroso will be for the WBA Super lightweight vacant championship.”
“The winner will face Ohara Davies no later than 120 days after May 13.”
Puello is not out in the cold as champion in recess. He will get a chance to regain the title after the organization completes its inquiry.
Davies was on pace to fight for the title after a thrilling ninth-round title stoppage over rival Lewis “Sandman” Ritson on March 4. His dream of becoming a world champion is within reach, with one more hurdle left.
Two Tanks has been on a seven-fight win streak since losing to title challenger Jack Catterall in October 2018. His other defeat was against former undisputed champion Josh Taylor in 2017.
With so much at stake, the British fighter will be paying extra attention to the Romero-Barroso showdown live on Showtime from Las Vegas.
