David Avanesyan Gets a Shot at Top Welterweight Contender Vergil Ortiz!
Unbeaten hard-hitting welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. (18-0, 18KOs) will be returning to the ring, likely on August 6. His opponent will be the very tough and skilled David Avanesyan (29-3-1, 17KOs). This will be Ortiz Jr.’s first fight since his August 14, 2021 fight against Egidijus Kavaliauskas.
Originally set to return against Michael McKinson on March 19, Ortiz was pulled from the fight after he was diagnosed with a condition called rhabdomyolysis. With him now seemingly fully recovered, he’ll renew his pursuit of a world title opportunity. Ranked #1 in the WBO, WBC, and WBA and #4 in the IBF, Ortiz is in a great position to challenge for a world title in the near future.
As for Avanesyan, he’s a fighter that’s been avoided, to say the least. The dangerous southpaw has been on a tear lately. He’s on a six-fight win streak, having stopped each fighter during this streak. Notable victims on his this current streak include Kerman Lejarraga and the once-highly touted welterweight prospect Josh Kelly. His promoter, Frank Warren, has been vocal about his fighter wanting to face another unbeaten welterweight contender, Connor Benn, as well as Ortiz.
Now, he has his chance against Ortiz. Avanesyan currently ranks # 7 in the WBO, # 8 in the IBF, and # 2 in the WBC. Needless to say, a win over Ortiz would catapult him to the cusp of a world title opportunity, especially in the WBC, as he would upend the number one guy in Ortiz.
