Vergil Ortiz Jr Excited to be Fighting Again After Health Scare
When top, unbeaten 147-pound contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. (18-0, 18KOs) returns to the ring on August 6, it’ll be almost one year since his last fight. In August of 2021, he took on and stopped former world title challenger Egidijus Kavaliauskas (23-2, 18KOs) in eight rounds.
As most know by now, Ortiz was scheduled to return to the ring March 19 against Michael McKinson. However, he was sidelined by rhabdomyolysis, a condition that causes damaged muscle tissue to release proteins and electrolytes into the bloodstream. Now that he’s cleared to return to the ring, his excitement level is understandably through the roof!
As camp for his next fight officially kicked off, Ortiz told Fight Hub TV how the early portion of camp has been going.
“I feel great. I feel awesome. There is really nothing else I can say about that. I definitely feel like this camp has started out like one-hundred times better than the last one did. We’re just ready to go; we’re ready to fight. “
At 24 years old, Ortiz is currently closing in on a world title opportunity. However, his next opponent is currently unknown. Recently he’s been linked to two other candidates, David Avanesyan and Michael McKinson, though nothing is set in stone. Regardless of who it is that will be standing across the ring from him on August 6, I think most people are simply glad to see him back healthy and in the ring, as he’s one of boxing’s brightest talents.
