Vergil Ortiz Jr Wants Fundora vs Spence Winner Over Crawford
In what many felt was a controversial victory, super welterweight fighter Vergil Ortiz Jr. (22-0, 21 KO’s) defeated Serhii Bohachuck and became the WBC interim 154-pound champion. Shortly before competing however Oscar De La Hoya and the very influential Turki Alalshikh expressed a desire to pit Ortiz Jr. against WBA super welterweight champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (41-0, 31 KO’s) next. However, rather than pursue a duel with Crawford, Ortiz let it be known he’d rather dance with the winner of Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KO’s) and Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr (28-1, 22 KO’s).
“It feels great, but now we have to fight the winner of Fundora and Spence! That’s what we’re after right now!”
DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE!
Naturally, there will be those who will accuse Ortiz Jr. of trying to dodge the challenge of two-division undisputed champion Crawford. In the eyes of many, he is currently the best pound for pound fighter on the planet and therefore offers the most desirable scalp to collect. At the same, he only holds the WBA title. The winner of Fundora and Spence will walk away with the WBO and WBC titles.
From this vantage point, it’s more difficult to fault Ortiz Jr. for wanting one fight for a shot at two titles. Technically, the Spence versus Fundora bout has yet to be announced, but the two parties have supposedly agreed to face one another in October. Yet, with politics of boxing and potential injuries being what they are, there is no rock solid guarantee that events unfold as presently scripted.
So perhaps there is a chance that Ortiz will take on Crawford next, especially with the huge sums of money that Alalshikh has been tossing around lately. In the end, as it always is, we will just have to keep our ears to the ground and wait to see how this ever more convoluted situation plays itself out!
