Caleb Plant Hits Team Benavidez Where It Hurts At First Official Presser!

For the last several years, there has remained open disdain and extreme animosity between super middleweights Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (22-1, 13 KO’s) and David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez (26-0, 23 KO’s). Luckily for them and the boxing public, they are now slated to go head-to-head this March 25. Unsurprisingly, during their first official presser to promote the show, the two men were just as antagonistic as ever.

As tempers flared. the security at hand was repeatedly required to step in front of the two principle characters. If being honest though, it was Team Benavidez who were obviously far more hot under the collar than was Plant and his squad. Jose Benavidez Sr., the father and chief second to The Mexican Monster, routinely interrupted Plant and continuously called him “a bitch” while he spoke at the podium. David Benavidez did this as well but also upped the ante by hopping from his seat looking to throw blows well ahead of their contract date. Yet, Plant, who is ranked #1 (WBC), #1 (WBA), #2 (WBO) and #3 (IBF), was no boy scout either. In spite of his calm, monotone voice, he quietly egged them on with aimed comments of his own.

“So anyways, March 25, I’mma be there, I’mma be in shape, I’mma be on weight, I ain’t going to be on cocaine and I’mma whoop his ass!”

NO LOVE LOST!

As this rivalry has intensified over the last number of years, Jose in particular has reiterated a number of times that this cocaine reference is a particular sore point for Team Benavidez. Although he remains undefeated, The Mexican Monster, and current WBC interim 168-pound champion, is a two-time WBC super middleweight champion. He lost his belt the second time outside the ring when he failed to make weight versus Roamer Angulo. The first time that he lost his title was due to failing a drug test when he was flagged for having cocaine in his system. Understandably, Team Benavidez wants to let that transgression fall to the wayside, yet Plant is never too far away from rehashing that past folly.

Aside from finally settling this multi-year’s old beef, the winner of this match will also be declared the WBC mandatory challenger for undisputed 168-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Plant certainly wants this opportunity for revenge as Canelo is the only fighter on planet Earth who enjoys a professional victory over him.

Like Plant, Benavidez has fruitlessly sought a match with the redheaded Mexican sensation for a number of years. This mutual motivation, coupled with their intense dislike for one another, should make this one explosive and memorable match-up. Regardless of what transpires in the ring however, 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the aftermath no matter what the fall out!
