De La Hoya Tells Canelo Alvarez to Respect The Golden Boy Name

Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO) went after Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya in a heated war of words. De La Hoya brought up old history of Canelo’s failed drug test while claiming that he made Canelo famous.

Boxing fans are well aware of the deep history between Canelo and De La Hoya. Once it was announced that Alvarez was fighting Golden Boy’s Munguia on May 4, it was only a matter of time before things erupted between him and his former promoter.

THE STATEMENT THAT WENT VIRAL

The Golden Boy Promotions CEO went into a rant at the press conference that has gone viral.

“Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez – period. The company you fought under for decades has always had one name, and it’s mine. So put some fucking respect on it . . . Remember when Jaime was 21 years old, volunteered to step in against Triple G and Canelo failed two drug tests.”

Alvarez attempted to get in the face of De La Hoya as people quickly jumped in, preventing things from escalating. Yet, he wasted little time delivering a verbal assault of his own in response.

“He tried to steal money and he’s a fucking asshole. He’s trying to keep the attention on him and not for Munguia.”

De La Hoya and his former protégé are a classic tale of two people who went from being friends to enemies. Since Alvarez left the Golden Boy Promotion umbrella in 2020, the two men have spent years verbally attacking each other.

Even recently, De La Hoya expressed having no respect for Canelo as a person. With the showdown featuring the two Mexican fighters quickly approaching, boxing fans are ready for action.
