Oscar De La Hoya Respects Canelo the Fighter but Not the Person
The animosity between Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya and undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KO) continues. De La Hoya has further made it clear that there is no respect for his former protégé as a person.
Ever since their bitter divorce in 2020, De La Hoya and Canelo have never had a kind word to say toward each other. One time the two got into a heated back-and-forth that resulted in the undisputed champion offering some harsh words for his former promoter.
The old saying, ‘time heals all wounds’, doesn’t apply when it comes to these two. De La Hoya kicked it off by criticizing Alvarez’s press conference announcing the upcoming fight with Jaime Munguia as boring.
SHOTS FIRED AGAIN
Canelo quickly brushed it off as De La Hoya acting stupid, considering he didn’t say it to his face during the press conference. While speaking to reporters during media workout for Devin Haney versus Ryan Garcia, the Golden Boy executive didn’t hold back when told about Alvarez’s response.
“Canelo talking all this shit. That’s all it is, that’s all it is, is shit. The fact that he can’t be around me because the attention is off him, that’s a big thing with him. It fucks with his head . . . I respect him as a fighter, but I don’t respect him as a person.”
In fairness, De La Hoya is right about the press conference being a little too friendly. However, he should throw some of the blame on his fighter, Munguia, who openly admitted that Canelo was his idol.
At some point, both men will have to realize this feud has gone on long enough and put this issue to bed. With the upcoming fight featuring the Mexican punchers set for May 4, this is only the beginning of the insults that will be passed around as the fight inches closer.
