Masamichi Yabuki Should Seek Unification with Olascuaga
IBF Flyweight champion Masamichi Yabuki has become one of the most dangerous fighters in boxing’s lower-weight divisions. A unification with WBO champion Anthony Olascuaga could be on the table in 2026.
On December 27, Yabuki (19-4, 18 KOs) showcased class, toughness, and relentless pressure with a stoppage over former junior flyweight champion Felix Alvarado. Alvarado was game throughout, but the defending champion ultimately proved too skilled and too powerful down the stretch.
Now 33 years old, Yabuki appears to be fighting at the peak of his career. However, operating in the shadow of celebrated countrymen such as Naoya Inoue, Junto Nakatani, and Kazuto Ioka, Yabuki remains somewhat underappreciated on the global stage. Becoming a unified champion would go a long way toward elevating his standing and legacy.
Olascuaga (11-1, 8 KOs) represents a compelling option. The WBO champion has competed frequently in Japan and has expressed an admiration for Japanese culture, making the matchup logistically appealing. Stylistically, the bout has all the ingredients for fireworks: Yabuki’s power-boxing approach against Olascuaga’s explosiveness and sharp athleticism.
Given Olascuaga’s willingness to fight in Japan, a deal between the two sides should be relatively straightforward to negotiate. Yabuki vs Olascuaga has the potential of being one of the most entertaining and meaningful flyweight clashes of 2026.
