Oscar De La Hoya Talks Up Making David Benavidez vs Jaime Munguia
Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya hit social media with news of a big fight featuring WBC Silver titlist Jaime Munguia (42-0, 33KO) and two-time champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez (27-0, 23KO).
Boxing fans shouldn’t be surprised, as Munguia mentioned fighting Benavidez recently. After passing the toughest test of his career against three-time title challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko, Munguia had no problem in welcoming a fight with The Mexican Monster, when asked.
The question that fans will be asking is: will this fight happen? In the past, we have seen attempts to match Munguia with PBC fighter in WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo. Their fight never materialized after De La Hoya demanded DAZN be involved.
BENAVIDEZ VS MUNGUIA COULD BECOME A REALITY
Well, things may be different now. The entities figured out a way to remove that roadblock in making Gervonta Davis versus Ryan Garcia on April 22. De La Hoya openly admitted that fans could see more collaboration with PBC, and Benavidez-Munguia could be the next project.
This news comes off the heels of De La Hoya and rival promoter Eddie Hearn trading words on social media over making Munguia versus Edgar Berlanga. Benavidez is coming off the most satisfying victory of his career over rival and former IBF champion Caleb Plant. After his quest to fight undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez failed, he has been linked to a possible showdown with WBA Regular champion David Morrell.
When looking at the financial implications, Benavidez could be persuaded to look in the direction of Munguia. Where there is smoke, there is fire, and the boxing community will be waiting to see how things play out.
